Green wing - mac's coma ?

Ive obviously missed something here,but why was Mac in a coma ?

As far as I can remember series 1 ended with them in the ambulance on the cliffs edge.

They havent explained the "proper" reason why Mac was in a coma yet.... there has been a rather whimsical explanation of the events by Guy, which suggested Mac had hit his head on an exWWII mine following the ambulance falling into the sea... but no proper confirmation :)

I've only just got into this but didn't the dark haired anaesthetist face a disciplinary commitee the other night where it was mentioned that "an anaesthetist drove an ambulance off a cliff with a brilliant surgeon inside" to which he replied something along the lines of "how about brilliant anaesthetist drove brilliant surgeon over the cliff?"
