Thoughtless BBC

Is this thoughtless and insensitive? At the end of the BBC News tonight, the last item was the police car that crashed killing one of the officers.

The next line from Huw Edwards, as he was smiling, was: 'That's all for tonight. Have a very Happy Easter. Goodnight'

I wonder what the officers' family thought about that?

It wasn't what he said. It was the point at which he said it.

He'd only just finished telling us about the crash and the dead officer, then he went straight on, smiling, and wished everyone a happy easter.

I think the item about the dead officer should have gone a little earlier.

I just thought it was disrespectful and insensitive.

I didn't see the programme, but jumping straight from a sad tale involving a policeman's death to a cheery goodnight does seem odd. I wouldn't blame Huw Edwards for it though, he's just doing his job. I'd blame whoever's responsible for scheduling the order of stories - the news should always end on a less serious story. It doesn't have to overly cutesy or amusing, just something less traumatic to ease the newsreader more naturally into the goodnight/happy Easter/merry Christmas bit.

I thought that this item should have been the first, by being put on so late in the programme, it was trivialised, and as you indicated, it must have affected his family.

I doubt that they were even watching the news, let alone getting upset over something said by a newsreader. I would suppose they have bigger things to worry about at the moment.
