Does anyone know why Disney periodicaly withdraw certain films and re-release them a few years later - my wife is an avid fan and cannot get hold of Cinderella anywhere and it has apparently been withdrawn - is it something to do with managing supply and demand? Anyone have any ideas where I could get one from? DVD Please.

They (Disney) withold sales for 3-5 years (I can't remember which one) of the most popular videos/DVD's to increase public interest - so after this time lapse we are so eager for these titles we rush out and buy them at the at full price (no special offers with Disney!) before the next withdrawal. Clever eh, maximum interest and maximum profit! Having said that I know I will still buy it when it's available.
I distinctly recall that Disney used to say that certain videos would be available for a limited time only and Never Sold Again. The kind of thing that makes people buy the videos all at once. Of course, those lovely family-oriented people might have noticed that new formats - DVD etc - are always coming so they'll be able to flog the same material to the same customers again and again and again, doubtless using the same tactics until people catch on...
Disney produces The Classics for a short time and then they are put into retirement for between 5 and 7 years. In this time they movies are not manufactured, however, stores are still allowed to sell remaining stocks they may have (so its worthwhile trying stores with large stock rooms). The reason the classics are put into retirement is due to the high costs of constantly producing films, which do not necessarily have a large enough market to sustain sales. When films are re-released, they are usually re-mastered (improving sound and visual quality) or have extra scenes or songs added. [email address removed as per site policy. - AB Editor]
