Can anyone briefly explain the plot of Donnie Darko, without confusing me or themselves?

Boy is chosen to fix accidently-created tangent universe, which was created by a plane engine falling into a wormhole. He does this at the end of 28 days, sacrificing himself in the process.

I personally don't believe that the plot can be explained briefly. There is so much symbolism in the film, religious and otherwise, that Donnie Darko is the best example (in many years) of a film being an individual experience for each viewer. Open your mind, enjoy, and take what you want from it.

I could make it simpler :p.... boy meets girl, whole buncha stuff gets introduced to confuse, dies to save her, the end.
