In the sixties and seventies, there was a chain of cinemas by the name of Gaumont (some may still exist). Where does the name originate? It doesn't seem to fit in with other cinema names like Empire, Regal, Plaza, ABC etc.

Leon Gaumont was a pioneer in the French film industry and founded the original company in Paris. The British branch of the company eventually became the Gaumont-British Film Corporation. It became part of the Rank Organisation after the second world war.
The Gaumont chain is still a huge organization in France.
