As part of the rules for claiming benefit is that they MUST be available to work, the answer would be no.

I heard that all housemates get paid an amount of money per week they are in the house from channel 4 or the production company.

Actually, they only have to be available for work if they are claiming Jobseekers Allowance. They could be in receipt of Incapacity Benefit or Income Support as a Lone Parent and not have to be actively seeking work. I can't see any of them being on either of those benefits though. And if they are receiving money for being in there it would affect benefits.
