Hey i was just wondering if any of you could reccommend any good British gangster style films ... like lock stock, and snatch ... the kind with actors such as Vinnie Jones etc ... preferably new, but oldish ones would also be appreciated. Im trying to find some for my dad ... he appears to be very fond of violent mobs ... just kidding hehe!

Thanks xx

The Long Good Friday, starring Bob Hoskins. Often cited by critics as one of the best.
There is only one british gangster film of any worth and the current crop of mockney rubbish would have to stand on a very big box to come up to the ankle of the daddy of them all - Get Carter.

I always remember a sixties gangster fil called VILLAIN.

It starred Richard Burton who not only was his usual excellent acting self, but God was he scary. Great film, car chases, sex, nastys the lot.

'Face' is good its got robert carlyle in it

Gangster No.1 with Malcolm McDowell and Paul Bettany.

I'd agree with 'The Long Good Friday', 'Get Carter' and 'Sexy Beast', all excellent films.

Also:

'Layer Cake' with Daniel Craig

"Love, Honour & Obey" with Jonny Lee Miller, Jude Law, Ray Winstone. A very good hard & funny film in the same mould as Lock, Stock.

If it's for your Dad go for the Long Good Friday which has already been mentioned. It is a great film & my Dad loves it. It's a classic Brit 70's gangster flim.
"Mojo" is also good, with Ricky Tomlinson and Spud out of Trainspotting, plus a few others
I know you want recent one's...but Brighton Rock with Richard Attenborough is very menacing! OK it was made in 1947 & the special effects are no way the same..but what a film!
..agree with kebabmeister love , honour and obay is superb one of my fave films, plus its got a fantastic cast...and karaoke too....

performance 1970, although it stars mick jagger the film is a classic gangster thriller about a guy on the run from the police and fellow gang members and hold's up in hotting hill.

villian 1971, Gangsters the Richardson's were jailed in 1967 and the Krays followed two years later. With these main gangs of the sixties behind bars, filmmakers in the early seventies decided to change the public perception of gangsters. By making films that illustrated the dark and disturbing side of their world, films like Get Carter and Villain.

mona lisa 1986, George(bob hoskins) was recently released from prison, after serving seven years at Her Majesty's pleasure. And he finds the world of petty crime has changed dramatically over the years. He once earned a humble living as an enforcer, but now drugs and hard-core porn are the order of day.

ermintrude35 the viagra scene had me in hysterics... well, lots of the film had me in hysterics!!

One of my German friends couldn't stop singing 'I wish I was a spaceman...' afterwards! :) Got to see it again now!

..fave quote that I can acctually quote on here...

Fat Alan: That's all very well, Jon, but a blade ain't a really effective weapon when you're up against someone who is trained in several different kinds of martial arts. No really, mate, these hands are like deadly weapons. I can protect myself. Come on, go for it. Stab me in the side.
[the others laugh]
Jonny: Why would I wanna do that?
[he stabs him]
Fat Alan: He stabbed me!
[the gang laughs harder]
Fat Alan: He stabbed me in the guts!
Ray: Look at his face!
Jonny: I'm sorry, Bruce.
Fat Alan: Shall I leave it in or take it out?
Ray: Leave it in and go out!

...I also need to watch this now...I'll bring the dvd, you bring the kebebs, lol.....

P.S....I met Rhys Ifans ......

ermindtrude35 you like chilli on your kebab? ;)

The scenes with Denise Van Outen were funny too, but the other really funny scene was the one where they're having the face off with the other gang and they're going on about attaching bayonets! :) I honestly don't think I've laughed out so loud at a film in a long time!! :)

...lashings of chilly sauce please ... you got any cold lagers too..?... it's just good to finaly meet someone who apreciates this very underrated film...most of my mates have never heard of it, and my ex thought it was the worst film he I ever made him watch...but then again he had terrible taste...
I have to agree with 'Sexy Beast', 'The long good Friday' and 'Get Carter'. 'Lock, stock' and 'Snatch' are all excellent films
Other British films I've enjoyed are:

Football factory
The Firm
Hard Men
McVicar
Nil by mouth
Made in Britain
Scum
Quadrophenia
Essex Boys
The Krays (not too sure about that one)

Hey thanks for all your suggestions .. im gonna head down HMV and have a nosy today =) ... and pjm007 .. im guessing alot of those films you've named, are about football hooligans (the firm, scum?) .. if so, nice choice ... im thinking my dad would enjoy these!!

Out of all the films I've listed only two are about football violence.

Football Factory & The Firm, the latter has a young looking Phil Mitchell in it.

Some films I must mention....

My favourite period for Brit (crime) films is late 1950s early 1960s and I must recommend the following:

The Criminal (1960) with Stanley Baker, directed by Joseph Losey - just as raw and gritty now as it was then; and it also has a great John Dankworth score;

Two other films with Stanley Baker: Hell is a City (1959) set in Manchester, and Hell Drivers (1957) - this one also has Sean Connery and Patrick McGoohan in it

And another favourite of mine is The Shakedown (1959) with Harry H Corbett and a really creepy performance from Donald Pleasance as a pervy photographer in a blackmail racket.

Otherwise I endorse recommendations above for Brighton Rock and Performance.

You might have to buy some of these on line or go to a really good DVD shop because sadly a lot of high street shops regard anything older than five minutes ago as not worth stocking...
