It started in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain. It was originally billed as the 'Festival Bikini Contest'. Former bingo hall manager Eric Morley recognised the success of the show and it went on to become Miss World. Fifty years on, it is attracting more than two billion viewers worldwide.
