Why are soaps so popular? The writing and acting of pretty much all soaps is rubbish and the story lines aren't very realistic, so why so popular?

Alright, its not as extreme as the old Saturday morning film series, but it is easy to find yourself wondering what is going to happen to a certain character and you find yourself watching the next episode to find out - and the next - and the next. I try to avoid soaps (but I have seen the odd Neighbours and I am still intrigued to know what happened to Connor).
