Who was the best Dr Who?

Because I go back to Episode One with Dr Who, I have fond memories of William Hartnell, and his prickly characterisation of the original Doctor. I remember being amazed at his over-the-collar white hair, in 1963, you would be seen as a potential rebel for wearing your hair at a challenging length, which just added to The Doctor's appeal to a nine-year-old boy. I think Patrick Troughton runs a close second, because he played the part like a 'junior' version of the original, and the rest simply didn't match up.

I too remember William Hartnell, though not quite from episode one. For me it's a tie between Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker. While the dandified John Pertwee was good, he didn't quite cut it for me.

It's such a subjective question but I would have to say Sylvester McCoy who to me was the only actor to bring any kind of suggestion that the character of the Doctor lived outside of the parameters of the series.

I think William Hartnell best conjures up the idea of Dr Who but I would say Tom Baker was the most popular.
