I don't get it, because Betty isn't ugly anyway!
She's a cute girl who wears glasses and braces on her teeth, about average height and weight.
She's not anorexic, not plastic, doesn't have hair extensions, implants, injections, cosmetic surgery etc etc.
She's real - or is that the joke?.
I've only seen the trailers BTW.

I'm sorry to say I tried with it but it really didn�t impress me. I thought it was going to be a lot funnier. sorry :-( and surely her turning beautiful would be missing the point of it all. That beauty comes from within.

I love the programme and the one thing I hope they do not attempt is to turn Betty into the fashion industry's personifaction of beauty. She is lovely as she is. It's the small minded fashion industry that needs to change. Size zero is not attractive, it's merely a walking, talking corpse.

In an interview with America, she says that she doesnt want Betty to turn beautiful because the whole point of the programme is to show that she is beautiful inside.

Apparently in one of the foreign versions they made her beautiful and the viewers hated it and turned off!

I do enjoy it although I did think it was going to be better, what with all the attention its had.

I think it was on in the background whilst I was adjusting some wardrobe doors. Can�t say it is really my thing (or the wife�s) as we all know how shallow those fashion and media types are already.

It reminded me very much of Ally McBeal but without the level of humour, the legal drama and without the courtroom battles. Pretty predictable stuff though.

Or was I listening to the wrong programme??

It's okay. I think JOEYGREEN above hit on it - it was (as is the way of these things) relentlessly trailed and shoved in our faces with poster campaigns, which creates a kind of buzz of expectation, then you find out it's quite good, and that's it really. It's very predictable and the storylines are pretty unvarying so far - it looks like things are going all wrong but Betty saves the day and gets her editor out of trouble, while Wilhemina is thwarted. The most recent one strayed a little bit from this well-trodden path, but I still feel myself losing interest.

Yes, it's annoying that the US idea of "ugly" is usually someone quite cute with glasses and frumpy clothes shoved on them. They're terrified of having someone REALLY unattractive. I do like that sneery secretary/receptionist type, who in last night's was overeating - she's very sexy.

What's slightly irritating is the way the show so obviously goes for the quirky, 'sophisticated' feel adopted by so many programmes of the last 5 years or so, like S&TC and Desperate Housewives. Even the incidental music in Betty sounds like DH. These programmes are starting to become identikit. We need something different!

The stupid thing is "Ugly" Betty isnt ugly at all. Any fool can see that she's an attractive woman with specs and braces.
If they wanted a real dog, then pick someone like Sonja from eastenders, but then the yanks don't want anyone on their screens who really is ugly, just someone pretending to be so.
