Subtitles

Is it possible to watch a programme with subtitles on without reading them?! I can't. If there are subtitles on I am drawn to read them, and often this means I know what is being said just before I hear it - and I also miss the visual nuances! Is this to do with different parts of the brain or just a personal thing?

I often use subtitles to know what is being said on programs, films and sometimes live news as there are bound to be words that i misheard; flat mates yelling (or other noises!) or so i can listen to music and still know whats going on on the tube. i do not find that i miss anything being shown as i can read the subtitles very quickly.

You could tape something accross the bottom of the screen. Like...er...um..A SPORAN!

That is one of the reasons why people use subtitles so they can read them if you don't want to be drawn to them then don't put them on.

Speaking for myself - no, I don't think you can! My wife and I often go to the cinema in France, where we see English language films with French subtitles. I find myself reading the subtitles, even though I don't need to; and worse still, if I don't quite understand the French, I feel as though I've missed something, even though I've fully heard the English speech. I think that it is something to do with parts of the brain; but it may be different for different people, because my wife does not suffer the same problem.
