I own my own domain name eg, myname@myname.com I only use it as a photo storing/viewing site so family around the world can view family pictures. it cost me about 40/$80 a year to run.
This week I was contacted by an agent who represents a comedian (up and coming) who has exactly the same name as me (i have checked the agent/ comedian on the net both seem genuine) he wants me to sell my domain name. What would be a good price to ask for?, I know it is not going to be life changing money but I don't want to be ripped off.
Ask him to make you an offer - double it add 50%
and start from there (the agent will know exactly how much it's worth! - if he accepts start kicking yourself - you didn't ask enough!)
.... or if he beats you down - in 6 months start kicking yourself when he tops the bill on every TV channel.
Or hang on a while ... see how he does ... if he makes it ... they will still want a .com address ...
if not .... then in 6 months start kicking yourself ....you could have made a quick buck!
My favourite comedian's "dotcom" address is already taken by someone else and he's instead got .net
Don't use it as some get rich quich scheme, if they're offering something generous just take it and get a new domain name.
If their offer doesn't justify the effort of contacting a few people and would barely buy you a crate of beer then keep it for yourself - just don't be greedy.
Incidentally, if your "site" already had a bit of regular traffic through it you could maybe haggle for a price (they'd get free visitors to the comedian expecting to see you) but that hardly sounds like it's the case...
