I missed the episode this series of er, when Abby gets a letter from Carter. Does anyone know what that letter said?

In a word - no, because they didn't tell us what was in the letter. We were left to guess, but the letter was seen by other ER staff members who referred to Abbey being dumped. I'm guessing it said " we are no good for each other" or something along those lines. ER is turning into the Abbey show these days.
