I read somewhere once that Thomas Harris based Hannibal Lector very losely on the infamous serial killer Ed Gein as he ate some of his victims. However from what I have read about Ed Gein, he was a country red neck that had a morbid obsession with his mother and who also made furniture out of the skin of his victims. So really the only similarity is the fact that he ate some of his victims. That, in my opinion is where the similarity ends as the character of Hannibal is an extremley intelligent, well mannered, highly educated doctor. I love his character and I especially love that Anthony Hopkins played him in the films as he was fantastic.
