In The Mail today there is an article about two sisters who for the past ten years have kept their poor mother refrigerated on the premises of a funeral directors and once a week she is brought out to the chapel of rest for them to visit her and apply foundation and lipstick. I can't believe this has been allowed to happen, but it states that it's perfectly legal.Where is the dignity in this for this poor woman. What do you all think?

Mad
bit creepy if you ask me.

I had imagined a perfectly preserved body and just thought it quite sad until i read the article

"When she died in 1997, the body was preserved with formaldehyde but it has deteriorated to such an extent that it is largely skeletal with some skin remaining on the upper half and head"

that then made me think that perhaps they are slightly mad, they obviously cant let her go. But at some point they will need to surely?

Nothing illegal in it? oh my word..I thought bodies had to be cremated or buried within a specific period of time.

Yes Pippa I thought the same as you. Thanks for putting the link on redcrx I haven't worked out how to do that yet.
no probs moonshadow.

Its a copy and paste thing. You need to hightlight the text you want to copy, in this case by left mouse clicking in the address bar of what you want to link to until it turns blue. Then click the right mouse button over it and select copy.

Then in your text that you want to put the link you right hand mouse click and select paste.
This should be in Body & Soul.
No..it should be here, or in 'News'.

Thanks redcrx I will try that next time.
cambus the last time I posted a question from the newspaper in Body & Soul it was moved to Media but I can see it should rightly have gone under Body & Soul given the subject.
ooooooooooer, just read the link. that is a real bad case of denial for these two. my mum died ten years ago and if id have done that to her, she would have come back to haunt me. really odd behaviour. they need to lay her to rest and get some counselling.....fast.
No it is not illegal as stated.

The law states that the deceased must be declared dead by a medically qualified person with the cause of death included as a seperate entry.

After that, the body can be left anywhere private.

Has nobody ever heard of Jeremy Bentham, the economist come social reforming politician??

I suggest you google images of him.

My mum passed away on Tuesday. She did not look very nice at the time of death as her cheeks were sunken & mouth open. I can not imagine how grotesque the mother in this case must look. These sisters loved their mum, but they should let her rest in peace.

I had never heard of Jeremy Bentham until you mentioned him Shadow Man,very interesting guy when he was alive. It does mention his head was made of wax in the Auto-Icon as they damaged the real one, Yuck !! Reminds me of The Chamber of horrors at Madam Tussauds, Blackpool years ago.
EEK whats it doing to the minds of the sisters, totally weird

I am so sorry to hear your Mum has passed away beejaybee my thoughts are with you. I lost my Mum when I was seventeen and 37 years later there is still a huge emptiness in my heart. I agree with you the sisters should let their Mum rest in peace. I hope I haven't caused you any distress bringing up this subject at this time.
