"...I wish that I knew what I know now, When I was stronger"
The song is 'Ooh La La' which was sung by Rod Stewart, but I am unsure if he wrote it or if his version was the original. I haven't seen the show you're talking about either, so I can't tell you if it's him singing it in this instance, but it's a start!
The show was called Grass..I loved it! It starred Simon Day (previously of Fast Show etc) as a police informant in the witness protection programme. Suprisingly good. Great song...
I always thought it said YOUNGER too....?? Can someone clear this up so I don't have to go and check (cos footie is about to re start!!)
I don't know what version is on the show but the original is by The Faces.
Poor old granddad,
I laughed at all his words,
I thought he was a bitter man,
He spoke of women's ways.
'They trap you, then they use you,
before you even know.
Well love is blind, and you're far too kind.
Don't ever let it show.'

CHORUS:

I wish that I knew what I know now,
when I was younger.
I wish that I knew what I know now,
when I was stronger.

The can-can such a pretty show
Will steal your heart awa
But backstage back on earth again
The dressing rooms are grey
They come on strong and it ain't too long
For they make you feel a man
But love is blind and you soon will find
You're just a boy again

When you want her lips, you get her cheek
Makes you wonder where you are
If you want some more then she's fast asleep
Leaves you twinkling with the stars
Poor young grandson there's nothing I can say
You'll have to learn, just like me
And that's the hardest way, ooh la la.

CHORUS

By the Faces (Rod Stewart was a member of the faces)
The tune was originally by the Faces but was sung by founder/bassist/sometime vocalist and former Small Face Ronnie Lane who also wrote it. It appeared in the Faces album of the same name and re-emerged on Rod Stewart's "When We Were The New Boys" album with his own vocal In the late Nineties when for a brief flickering moment Rod remembered he was in Faces and used to be really good. He has since gome back to being rubbish. The version on "Grass" is the original as sung by Ronnie Lane.
