Can anyone one remember a sort of horro film from the early eighty's perhaps even earlier that showed people wearing theatre masks

is it phantom of the opra?

'Theatre of Blood' has that sort of thing. With Robert Morley & Vincent Price.

"Theatre of Blood" is unlikely to be what JR is thinking of - that was 1972, and there were only a few brief scenes with masks.
