Film title request

Can anybody tell me the title of a film? Can't remember the lead role actor but it was basically about a police detective whose doctor tells him he has a heart condition and not long to live so he tries to get himself killed in the line of duty in order that his family benefit from his death.
He always ends up surviving and hailed a hero then finds out he wasn't dying after all.
Someone out there must remember it. Cheers in advance and Merry Xmas to all.
