Don't agree with the smoking in bed, but 'back in the day' there used to be a very scary senior nurse called Matron who ruled the hospital with an iron fist and she used to check on the cleaning and if it wasn't done properly then there was hell to pay, there is a lot to be said for old fashioned values and going around running a white glove on surfaces would be a great way to start, I was cleaner in a hospital albeit a private one (though it shouldn't make a difference) and the supervisor used to go around after you had cleaned your allocated rooms and believe me she didn't mince words if it wasn't done properly, I trained as a nurse after a couple of years and since then have watched things go from bad to worse, the majority of hospital cleaners just do not care!! if you tell them they look at you with complete contempt, and they don't have anyone checking up on them.
