I watched part 1 of Messiah last night but got rather confused by the storyline, could any kind soul enlighten me before tonight`s episode.

Who is the man in a coma on life support, who is his wife, where do they fit into story?

I take it the three lots of murder victims are totally unconnected or are they?

Any help to understand the plot would be much appreciated.

The man in the coma is the old police boss, who is married to the black CPS girl. He was having a fling with another black girl who saw him being mowed down by a car.

This girlfriend has been seen in the episode sat in her car outside the hospital, gazing wistfully at his ward window. His wife suspects he was having an affair but doesn't know who with.

Because the police boss is in a coma, his replacement has been drafted in to team - the chap who was in Hustle.

The only connection we can tell to date between the murder victims is they are all of the Abrahamic religion - Jewish, Muslim and Christian. They had lifestyles that could be linked to the end of the world as predicted in the holy books of these three religions.

How the girl claiming to have been abused by her father fits in, I have no idea.
Further to Ethel's excellent answer......as far as I understand, the girl claiming to be abused by her father was going out with the murdered Muslim teenager. He was about to give evidence in court for the defence, claiming the weird church the girl belongs to had brainwashed her into making the allegation.
Oh yes - of course she was!

And the police boss in the coma (Peter) girlfriend is the DS who drank herself stupid in the bar and made a pass at the CPS man.

VERY many thanks Ethel & Mrs Overall - I understand it a lot better now. I realised that Hustleman was a replacement and knew about his Israel connection from the newspaper write-ups. Sadly, and at the risk of being criticised, I did not realise there were TWO different black girls - no matter what colour the actors I always get mixed up as to who is who.
I am exactly the same - these 'Hollywood blondes' all blend in to one another and if there are two in one film, I'm totally confused.

There is a similarity between the wife and the girlfriend - the wife is the one that was going to suffocate him with a pillow.
Well!

Excellent drama. Never guessed the killer.
Well , before that final scene he'd only been in it for 2 minutes , so it would have been difficult to guess! Good though.
Not up to the standard of the previous "Messiah" shows though.

Come back Ken Stott...
Yes , agreed there. I do like Ken Stott.
