he was a vet,not sure if a regular one or a zoo one,actor had a beard and dark curly hair? would google but not sure where to start lol,any ideas?

Think you're talking about Rob Heyland,Metz. The programme was One by One,about a zoo vet,as you thought;-).James Ellis starred in it too.
