How do you find out your phone line provider is? I called BT to connect up my line as i have just moved in and they want �125 as the line is owned by another company, they can't tell me who though... any ideas?

Don't know. I'd contact all the most common ones, and ask if they have a line connected to.......
why dont you contact the previous tenants and ask them
i think other than bt it would have to be a virgin phone line although im not 100%

The Solicitors who acted for you in the purchase should be able to get the information from the sellers Solicitors.

It might have been filled in on some of the forms during the conveyancing if you bought the place.

Might be an idea to go through the forms if they were sent to you.

If you are renting have you tried the letting agents?

Is there any old post around from phone providers?

is the phone definately off, have you tried plugging a phone in and seeing if there is a dial tone
Looks like if there is no existing BT line you will have to pay the �124.99 to be reconnected to BT in any event..

Are you thinking of taking a phone line with the existing company to avoid the charge?
was it not in the HIPs (home imfomationn pack)http://www.homeinformationpacks.gov.uk/ that the previous owner had made up ? HTH Tez
I would bet a whole penny the phone line is cable through Virgin Media.

All the others use BT line in some form (Hull is the exception)
I had exactly the same thing when I moved house, it took forever but BT found out for me and asked for it to be disconnected and there was no charge! But then I had the same problem with my internet! Eventually after I have lived there for about 4 months I have both working!
As an extra thing for you, if you choose Sky as your phone provider then they will refund the �125 charge that BT insist on for sending an engineer round
Cakeboy - can you confirm that Sky do this and post a link maybe as the �125 BT want is the only thing stopping me getting hooked up to sky. Thanks, sorry to divert the post !!

Well its def not Tiscali, they go throught the BT line. I called them and they couldnt even check to see if the the last person in the house was a customer. Whereas Virgin go through cable and still assure me its not them. maybe its NTL or something? Any more ideas? i do need to go through all my paperwork and i am sure i remember seeing BT!! There is a line in the house, cannot connect the phone to it just yet as the plastic box bit is in bits!
