Billy Liar, by Keith Waterhouse. Towards the end of the story, a depressed and anxious Billy meets the elder owner of the firm for which he works, and in his anxiety unconsciously starts to mimic the proud old guy to his face - then he finds out (too late as usual) that people are rarely quite as stupid as they look..!! :o)

TommyC you're spot on. What was the firm called - 'Shadrack and ..'?. Can't remember it. Shadrack was the old guy's partner played by Leonard rossiter I think.
