Perhaps "van der Valk? aka "Eye Level" . probs wrong but good question split58!
Didn't Dennis Waterman's "I Can Be So Good For You" top the charts?
Ooooh, that is a good question. Acker Bilk's recording of "Stranger On The Shore" (from a BBC series of the same title) was a number one in the NME chart in January 1962. If you count that.
Armed with my trusty Guiness book of hit singles, best I can find is "THEME FROM M*A*S*H(SUICIDE IS PAINLESS)" by "MASH" 31/5/1980
Eye Level by The Simon Park Orchestra (1972) definitely predates the Theme From MASH (in terms of topping the chart at least). Don't know if there were any others before that though.
