What does it mean when American versions of films are unrated?

In America films are rated by the MPAA in much the same way that they are here in the UK. The ratings system is "voluntary" so, in principle, a film can be released as "Unrated", i.e. not classified by the MPAA. In practice though, these uncensored films are rare because distributors and advertisers will not normally handle unrated films. An example of an unrated film in the US is Kids.
