TV series from 70's/80's

Does anyone know the name of a TV series set in the late 70's/80's where the main character lived on a canal barge. I think he was either a private detective or an ex-policeman. He was a middle aged tall, dark haired guy who wore a leather jacket.

Definitely Travelling Man.Shoestring had a boat but he rented a room in the house of his lawyer girlfriend.

Can I just point out that it was a narrowboat not a canal barge. A barge is a very wide boat, virtually the width of the Bridgewater Canal where much of this series was filmed.
