From what I could gather - Adam was the shepherd - he manipulated the other women so that he could get his girlfriend out. Why didn't Mel check to see if Matt was dead? Call for backup? Why didn't Boyd see if Mel was still alive, call the ambulance? Boyd didn't check Matt or Emily were dead either. Only a TV programme.....
..And why do the women call him Boyd instead of Sir, or Guv, or Chief Super etc?
The other girls were involved because of a plot dreamt up between Fay and Adam when he killed his parents. Adam became the Shepherd and did all that stuff to other girls so that they could frame Matt Carney as preying on mentally ill girls and then when he was dead and unable to defend himself then Fay would be declared not insane and let out of prison due to diminished responsibility. He stabbed Fay because he knew the Police were onto him and Fay was the only witness left who could say what happened. Also by stabbing himself he would have a kind of defence against any prosecution they might bring against him (the only physical evidence being the anti-burn resin on the case containing a crucifix in Matt Carney's flat). I think Boyd didn't check Mel was alive because it was such a huge drop and there was so much blood pouring out of her head. Possibly the reason Mel didn't check Matt was dead was because her first priority is probably to secure the scene - you don't want to be bent over a dead body when there could be someone with a gun on the loose. Sorry for the long winded answer! I thought it was a pretty good episode and I'll admit to having a tear in my eye for Mel.

If that was the case, how did he get access to the girls files - Matt Carney was the one who'd had access. And why didn't Boyd check out where the crucifixes were made. It's a great programme but I really do think they make it unecessarily complicated
Do you really think Mel would still be alive after falling about 20 floors headfirst onto Boyd's car?! I think he probably guessed she was dead by the fact that her brains were splattered all over his windscreen. Sorry for the image, but you can't survive a fall like that! I agree that Adam was the shepherd, but am not really sure why so many other women were involved...maybe in his quest for power??
In the first episode, Adam said he never took his place at medical school but it turns out he did - failed the first year and beat up the professor - so he got access to the girl's records that way
Ok can I just ask why people watch this when they don't get it?!
Adam got access to the files through Matt Carney. MC faked a letter from his brother to get access. Boyd didnt check Mel, because even falling 2 stories is likely to be fatal especially when you collide with a car going about 20 miles an hour - the energy of the falling body meeting a moving object with the mass of a car would be fatal don't you think?
It was a little complicated but the scene when Matt and David met in the Asylum was when Matt admitted to David that he had given the case details to somebody on the phone, he didn't know who he was, turns out it was Adam aka the shepard. The reason the other girls were involved was to back up the story of his girlfriend i.e. that she was being manipulated, making it look like David Carney was involved and shifting attention away from Adam.
Ok...I'd never seen it before, but got into it Sunday night...but what was the connection between Adam and either of the Carney brothers ? As far as I could tell, the only 'evidence' of a connection was that there were traces of a cream used for burns on a box found in Matt Carneys flat.
My big grouse is why on earth Mel turned her back on a murderer which enabled her to be surprised and thrown over the wall. what sort of training did she have???
Ok - yes she was likely to be dead. As a trained first aider I was taught to never assume that someone is dead until told by someone who is qualified. How many times in tv programmes does someone come across a 'dead' body with no idea of the circumstances and just annouces 'He's dead' without even checking? A police officer ought to check at least so that he can put it into his report don't you think? At the end of the day it was a good drama, if not confusing.
Forget why did Mel turn her back on her, why did Mel take the gun off her and then leave it on the sofa????
The Connection between Adam and Matt was that Adam was Matt's anonymous sponser. That is how Adam got access to the files. They call Boyd "Boyd" to show that it is a very close group. They don't have the formalities that other depts have. Look at the way they all argue with Boyd. He's more their mentor than their boss. IMHO.
