I recall a sitcom that began with a guy getting the sack from his job, he buys flowers to break it to his wife gently who tells him she's leaving him. I think there may have been a few more bad luck things occur. He then tries to commit suicide by jumping from a railway bridge, as he jumps whilst a train approaches, the hood of his coat gets caught on a bolt sticking out of the wall of the bridge and he is left hanging in mid-air. Dear John springs to mind but I am totally unsure. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I used to love dear john, and it definitely wasn't that. Can't say it rings any bells.
