In what format are you copying the films to your HD?

Use DVD Shrink to compress and convert your dvd to VOB files.

Then use something like WinAVI to convert the VOB files to AVI, which can then be watched using Windows Media Player

you can download both software as torrents from Mininova.org

MR.Bounty and MATRIX,thanks very much, if only i could understand what you were saying. When i insert my dvd i am prompted by DVD decrypter(1.00)Matsita UJDA 760 to copy, i don't know what happens then until i am prompted to remove the dvd.any subsequent "fiddling"on my part fails to bring about anything of either useor help.Being a technophope is beginning to be a problem.which age does not help.
regards(typing is not much better either)
Ok, download DVD Shrink

http://www.dvdshrink.org/
manuals and free software above

DVD Decrypter will convert your film, BUT it wont compress it to fit onto a 4.7gb disc, so use DVD Shrink.

Once you film has been converted you should see 2 folders, one that says AUDIO_TS and the other will be VIDEO_TS. Audio will be empty and video will have the VOB files.

Now, download WinAVi, and use it to convert the VOB files within the folder to AVI, and hey presto!!!
