Who's the best Max Cady?
I watched the DeNiro one some time ago and thought it was a great performance. That was until last night when I saw the Mitchum one (1962) wow, total phsycotic menace, terrific performance, so for me Mitchum get's it. When the original was just perfect makes you wonder why they bothered to update it. Don't get me wrong the new one is very good attempt and very watchable. I'll never understand why Mitchum did not get an oscar for the original though.

I watched the remake simply because at the time it was one of the newer video's in the shop. Watchable, but I preferred the original by a mile.

Have to say I disagree. Mitchum's Max Cody was menacing, and it's simply one of the great towering performances of cinema.

De Niro's Max Cody is chilling. Simply chilling. I thought he was one of the most evil creations ever.

Also - just fyi - i got a box set with the two versions in a certain chain store for �6 - about �5.

I preferred Mitcham in the role only because De Niro is one of my favourite actors and I only associate him with "winning roles" I couldn't take him serious in Cape Fear he is more of a saviour than villain!!

i love the remake, but think Mitchum is the best villain.

Have you seen him in Night of the Hunter? That's one of my all time favourites. He's very chilling in that!
