what does it say about us as a society?

I watched "Britain from above" the other week and part of the show focused on the control room for the national grid and demand for power at the end of Eastenders because of a zillion kettles going on. What does it say about us as a nation that we have millions of people who are hooked on this unrealistic unadulterated drivel? ditto soaps in general.

Unfortnately, they have no lives of their own and make up for this by watching the antics of fictional people (who many believe are real judging by some of the posts in the TV category here).

I don't watch Eastenders - Coronation St is the only soap I watch and I love it for a bit of harmless escapism - I've watched it from the very first episode.

I do think tv was better when there were far fewer channels, no morning tv (apart from schools programmes later on) and tv shut down before midnight.

I still can't watch tv in the daytime, with the exception of the lunchtime news, it feels very odd to me.

I don't think it says anything about us as a society lol except that people like to watch soaps! Where's the harm?
I think the fact that this country on the whole seems more obsessed with football and watching grown men kick a ball around a pitch says a damn sight more! but then it's each to their own isn't it?

Also I watch some soaps and also have a life! Quite a full one actually hence why I like to chill out at the end of the day once the kids are in bed and watch drivel :o)

Oh Ethel, at last someone who agrees with me about Corrie. It's the only soap I watch too.

I tried to endure EE when I was going out with someone who loved it, but it was so painful.

I only watch Corrie. I used to watch Emmerdale but then missed a few episodes and lost the plot so I don't bother with it now. I love Corrie though.

Well I watch Corrie and also love Hollyoaks and I post about them on here. Believe it or not, I know they are about fictional people, but they are lighthearted and like Ethel I enjoy them for a bit of harmless escapism. The fact that I watch some soaps does not mean I don't have a life of my own - I certainly do. And some people spend far more time on here talking to 'fictional' characters than I do watching soaps! And as Rtaxtron points out, there is far more drivel on AB, but people seem very hooked on it!

I've always hated Eastenders, although lately I've got somewhat more tolerant of it. This happened around the time that the rather lovely Maggie O'Neill joined the cast.

R1 I am not a soap fan but each to their own. We all like to watch different things. However we are one if not the most hard working countries in the world - what harm is a littlechilling out at the end of the day.
I don't judge people anyway, let alone based on their tv choice.

I agree with Ethel, I have watched Corrie from the very beginning and would hate to miss it! I can't watch TV during the day either (not even the lunchtime news) and I also would prefer to have only four or five channels. With all the channels we have now, there is so much drivel on that none of it's worth watching.

If there is nothing on that I want to watch, the TV goes off and the radio comes on. Oh for the days of Radio Luxembourg!!
