Can anybody tell me why Michael Shanks decided to leave the show for one season (to be replaced by Corin Nemek), only to return? Many thanks.

The official explanation is that he felt that his character wasn't being given enough to do. Reading between the lines, I suspect that he wanted a bigger part and/or more money, which became forthcoming when Richard Anderson took a step backwards to spend more time with his family (hence less O'Neill in Season 7).
