I think this series is brilliant, I was once married to a compulsive gambler and the writers have got it spot on. Anyone else on here have experience in their family of gambling, I don't mean a couple of quid on the Grand National, I mean when 1,000s of pounds, houses, belongings all go up in smoke.
Hi puss. No, not had personal experience of it, but just had to pop on to say i think Craig Cash + Phil Mealey are brilliant writers. It's been nearly as good as Early Doors. x
Hiya Bathsy, the things that are happening in this programme are like a mirror of what I went through, the little lad especially. My ex would pick my son up for the day and leave hime standing outside the bookies for hours with a packet of crisps and a comic.
My sister was once married to a gambler... ive missed the other showings of sunshine but watched tonights one and i loved it , hasnt the little lad got a deep voice? some well known actors in it as well .
A bloke I work with is just like that, I`ve watched him put 400 in a roulette machine in the bookies in 3 hours, then go to the bank and draw out another couple of hundred quid just to try and win it back
I watched a neighbour of mine in a local club put 150 in a machine and then change a cheque at the bar for another 100, she was betting on winning a jackpot of 100, she didn't win it.
On a smaller scale, a neighbour of mine who I know is struggling money-wise was in the newsagents the other day. She bought 6 lottery scratchcards, went outside strathed them off, came back for 6 more---this went on for about 20 minutes. She had a look of determination/desperation on her face when she was scratching the cards, she's obviously really needing a win. I felt sorry for her.
It's a mug's game - but like so many addictions - so easy to get into.
Sunshine portrays the whole dilemma and side effects brilliantly. I love that little boy who plays Joe and the interaction between him and Bernard Hill who plays is grandad is brilliant.
I don't think the first episode was very realistic. It showed him having 3 bets, all of which he won (what happened to the 4 grand he won?) and then the only bet he lost was because he was cheated into thinking he couldnt lose! The scam only worked because of what he overheard in the toilet - what if he hadnt gone to the toilet at all? Not realistic at all.
