I think referring to a baby as 'the baby' is pretty common among parents.
As parents of three girls and one grand-daughter, our one male family descendent, the boy Jacob, is universally referred to as 'the boy' by Nana-Mum and Grandad Pandy - and he is as high in our affections as it is possible to get!

I suppose I differ. I refer to my daughter by name, collectively refer to my sisters as 'my sisters' and nieces and nephews by their individual names. I even refer to my cat by his name.
If it is an impersonal reference (i.e. I didn't know them personally, such as with a colleague) then I might ask how are 'the boys'. But thats all.

I actually agree with Tezmand...I find it odd when people refer to their children as 'THE baby'. I think they should be called by their names or if they have a baby name, (you know, like Pickle, pumpkin or fanny adams ect, or even MY baby! lol) but 'THE BABY to me sounds like he/she is just a toy or something. IMO. x
