Oliver Postgate RIP

How sad that Oliver has gone at the age of 83. I'm sure there are many on this forum for whom his voice is a part of their childhood viewing.

Absolutely. Just hearing his voice takes me back to the magical times of childrens' TV - I adored his voice, so comforting, and the magic of those cut-out figures.

I wonder if today's children miss out the imagination we used to add to the magic of those simple visuals.

What a wonderful imagination he had. I loved Bagpuss and Ivor. I see from the link there are thoughts of bringing Bagpuss back. Wouldn't that be a great and fitting tribute for him?

Strangly enough, Rosetta, Oliver wouldn't let anybody else animate his creations, though it would be nice for today's children to have their own series of Bagpuss et al.
10 years ago, I worked on a BBC promo that wanted to feature Bagpuss and Clangers, Oliver didn't want anybody else to animate his characters, and he didn't want to do it himself. We had to resort to a clip from the Bagbuss opening sequence. There was a noticable drop in picture quality, which was sad given the great shows he had made.

I recently bought a triple-pack DVD containing Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine and the Clangers. I bought it for my daughter (honest) and not to watch them myself one sunday afternoon, like I did the other day....

Great stuff and she'll appreciate the shows when she is older.

I was very saddened on hearing that this brilliant man had passed away.

Our daughters spent many a time watching The Clangers, Ivor the Engine, Noggin the Nog & Bagpuss, in fact I still have a Bagpuss sitting with my cuddly toys!

One of my grown up daughters does have a Clangers DVD which I bought her a couple of years ago, but the triple on also sounds good!

Watching Bagpuss, Clangers etc makes me feel so nostalgic. Some of them get shown on Nick Jr in the evening after 8pmish and it's a real trip down memory lane. So very basic and no special effects but real magic! My kids love watching them even nowadays when there are so many kids programmes/channels around.

tony, I remember that promo very well, the little boy became quite a star at the time lol

now all I need is grandchildren so I have an excuse to buy that triple DVD set. Well, after all, you have to watch it first to make sure its not faulty.

i was very sad to hear he had died, as a child of the late seventies i was raised on bagpuss and the clangers, and still love them now. Rest in peace, Oliver.

Absoulutely, my husabnd and I are both 41 and LOVED Bagpuss especially. My dogs leap with joy when I make 'Clangers' noises!
