My son has a Sky+ box that he no longer wants. Can he give it to me to use?

yes but in order to get full functionality you will need to contact sky.

What will that involve.............apart from them trying to get more money out of me?
Assuming you have a Sky dish already you will need to upgrade your dish LNB so that it is a twin LNB instead of a single one and inform Sky so that the record function can be used and that your viewing card will work with the new box. They have the power to enable and disable your machine from recording and also playing back previously recorded programmes no subscrption = no recordings.
