he was called a samiad (spelling??) It is pronounced sammy-ad. there was a sequel called return of the samiad.

it's spelt psammeadd. it was, indeed, a fantastic series! i hope mr branagh and his friends do it justice in this new film...

Eddie Izzard is doing the voice of the psammeadd! I don't like the way it is a creature in a shell who can walk though (albeit on a beach) 'cause I liked the idea of it emerging out of a child's sandpit.
