I thought this was great, easy watching and funny, but it does help if you have read the books. I know its only short episodes, but the books give you a lot more of the background about the people and their attitudes, and describe the surroundings etc in such a way that you feel you know the place and the people.

Brilliant .Yes it does help to have read the books. Could happily have watched a couple of hours of it .An hour wasn't enough to develop the characters really for people who haven't read the books .
They might flesh it out a bit more as it goes along .Which is more than probable as right at the end she was listening to Note Mokoti's record so they must bring that all in and her marriage to Mr Matekoni etc .
Unless they are thinking of a second series if it proves popular .
But I think to get the gist of all ten books in six hours is pushing it a bit .

I must admit I struggle with some of the pronunciation in the books e.g. is it Note, or Notay, or Notee? Also the garage is it the Twock Leng Road or the Too Kleng Road? Sad I know, but I was the same with Watership Down, having been a proof reader in a former life I find it hard to read without analysing the pronunciation and spellings!

And don't even get me started on Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter!
