I've just finished reading "The Other Boleyn Girl", which I enjoyed immensely. Mary's first husband died of "the Sweats". Can anyone tell me what this was? It seems to have been feared as much as the Plague. I imagined it might be influenza, considering the fear at the moment of Swine Flu, which is also accompanied by high temperatures. I would very much like to know.

I googled it as it is quite an interesting period to read up on rather than just be told what the sickness involved:

Very interesting Dot: Was God trying to tell the English something?? & Why did He give it to us Irish Up the ANNALS - rather unfair I thought. & to think he let the Scotts off scot free! Well, I never . . . . . ..

Thanks a lot. I've had a look at both websites and am absolutely amazed. Didn't know there was anything like this at all. It seems to have been a completely separate illness. At least I know now that there was an actual illness called the Sweats, or more likely The English Sweats. How interesting that it did not go into Scotland. I wonder what the Scots have that the English haven't!
