trying to find the name of a western film

My husband is trying to find the name of a western he went to see (in the 70's) during the power cuts.
It starts with an old man and a young man in a shack being shot at by three men who then set fire to the shack. The old man buries the young man under the floor and puts a piece of zinc over him, with a stove pipe for breathing purposes. The old man runs out and gets shot, when the shack is in ashes the gunmen satisfied that the young man has perished in the fire, ride away. Unfortunatly the power was lost at this point so do not know what happened. Desperately been looking for years for the title, can anyone out there help???
