In William Wyler's 1944 WW 2 documentary film The Memphis Belle the narrator mentions - "filmed at a secret airfield somewhere in Britian" - does anyone know the name of the airfield?

Yeah, Bassingbourn in WW2.

Film was filmed at Duxford as well as the then recently closed RAF Binbrook.

Incidently, the film 'Full Metal Jacket', also staring Matthew Modine, was filmed at Bassingbourn (apart from some of the inside scenes).

Many thanks for the answer and the weblink. I managed to purchase a copy of the original William Wyler movie last year and it is great!

I forgot to mention, Bassingbourn is now an Army barracks and the majority of the airfield has been dug up and turned into an assault course (why it was used for Full Metal Jacket).

The second half of 'Full Metal Jacket'  was filmed at the North Thames gas works, Beckton, here in East London.

The area is now mainly soulless superstore retail parks.
