I think this was the role of James Herriot, the vet in All Creatures Great and Small. This 70's/80's TV series was based on the novels of James Herriot (real name Alf Wight), set in rural Yorkshire in the 1930's. Incidentally, Herriot (Wight) was a Scot from Glasgow, not a posh Englishman like Christopher Timothy who ended up taking the role.
