There's some drivel about wedding planning ona an American programme, the couple of which are brits, one english and one scottish.

Why do british people sound different when on programmesor even films from a different country?

Plus they have what the scottish person says, who hasn't got a broad accent, subtitled!

Oi-be a poor show if every accent -and we all have one- was subtitled.
I just think people are blooming lazy re the Scottish accent.

If it is an American program, then it is subtitled for the American audience. The Scots accent is something Americans do not hear very often. Just because you find it easy to understand does not mean everyone can.If you were to watch a British-made program about residents of the deep South,chances are it will be sub-titled for the British audience.

You're right pasta I know I've seen news/documentary progs from the US where sub-titles have been added because their accents were hard to follow.

I haven't, but I see your point. I heard something about Ant and Dec weren't given the job to host an American programme because they wouldn't understand their accents.

I really struggle to understand a broad scottish accent, equally in the past when I worked in London, I had to learn to talk without my Devon accent, nobody could understand me. :-)

I have no trouble and can do; east scottish, mancunian, brummie, north welsh, northern and southern irish and suffolk.

I have lived in different parts of the UK and each time, I have found that I have to adapt both my comprehension and my own language to fit in and understand local dialect (and long may they continue). They often subtitle programmes which I can fully understand - although I must admit to being stumped by some trawlermen in Peterhead, I could not understand them at all - and that was subtitled, so I wasn't alone.
