I was reading a Sunday magazine at the weekend which had a list of the top 10 scary movies of all time. Before I even opened the page I was pretty sure The Exorcist would be there and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and they were 1st and 4th respectively. However I was surprised at how many of the films I'd never heard of before. One of them was called Cannibal Holocaust which sounds like an absolutely mental film which I'm surprised is not banned. Has anyone ever seen it and would you recommend it?

it's 30 years old, what sunday magazine?
The Exorcist was number 1 in this week's Radio Times list of horror films - although their choices are a bit on the safe side.

I have seen CH, but it's more just for shock value than serious cinema. Having said that, your assumption is right - it *has* been banned and censored in many countries, so it's worth a look just to see what the fuss is about. There are quite a few gory scenes of torture to people. Note that it also contains some scenes of actual cruelty to animals, which I certainly couldn't justify for entertainment purposes. Apparently some scenes also include footage of real public executions.

So if that sounds like you could watch it, then it's your choice.
TBH .. it's tame ... and so is Ferox .. by todays scary standards anyway!

What is Ferox Albags? dotty it was The Irish Sunday Star magazine called Amen. The full list was in reverse order...

10. Audition
9. Inside
8. Opera
7. A Serbian Film
6. Martyrs
5. Freaks
4. Wolf Creek
3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
2. Cannibal Holocaust
1. The Exorcist

I've only heard of and seen 1, 3 and 4. While we're at it has anyone seen any of the other films on the list and are there any recommendations?
That list seems to be confusing 'gruesome' with 'scary'. (The shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho' doesn't show any injury being inflicted, yet it's widely regarded as one of the most 'scary' movie scenes).

If you're REALLY curious about 'Cannibal Holocaust' this is the link you need (or, quite possibly, which you DON'T need)!

Chris
I'm sure I saw a few of these such as CH, Driller Killer and I Spit On Your Grave when I was about 14/15 in the early eighties on VHS. There was always some local video shop who would rent a copy to an older brother.

Most scenes have probably now been surpassed by the likes of Hostel and Saw.

Funnily enough I'm sure I read recently I Spit On Your Grave was being remade.
Chris - just out of interest how does a movie like that stay on Google for so long being so violent and copyright issues etc?
Hi CK:
I can only assume that, just like posts on this site, all uploads stay in place until someone complains. If nobody produces a valid complain the upload remains in place.

Chris
good point! thanks
I too saw Cannibal Holocaust on VHS in the early 1980s (just before the BBFC took control and rated every video release).
I remember that the camera work was very documentary style, so it made it quite realistic to my teenage mind.
There is very little to the plot of the film as far as I remember.
I think I was more surprised by the nudity in the film rather than the horror.
I haven't seen it since.
Also, the "video nasty" era in the 1980s caused a bit of controversy. The list of banned/cut/controversial films can be found here. Some of them are a lot more mental then CH.

I'm on a mission to watch them all uncut!

I think I'll watch it and see how shocked I get. Don't really remember any films having too much of an effect on me. The last film I remember finding scary was Drag Me To Hell but I can't even remember much about the actual film. Must watch it again actually.
I've got CH on VHS,i'm sure on the old Vippco label and it's not a bad film, like others say it was "shocking"in it's day but a bit wishy washy now.im on a mission now to hunt out all my vhs video nasties, also have new york ripper, toolbox murders and i think The Burning uncut versions.Wonder if they're worth anything???
$hag Me To Hell .. Scary? lol ... made me laugh : )

Ooops .. sorry ... typo.
