Best dead-pan actor - brilliant films. He was 84 - that was a bit of a shock, didn't realise he was that old.
Question Author
no doubt some will say 84 isn't old :)

I agree tho, best dead-pan actor. Wasn't he on a chat show some years back and pharted for the comedy effect?
he did the odd apperance in due south very funny guy x
yes a great artist
The short-lived Police Squad! tv show (which give rise to the Naked Gun films) is brilliant.
Can't say I ever got his style of comedy but I know lots did. Sad news none the less.
Classic show.

Very sad news indeed. Airplane is one of my favourite films.

And yes, Police Squad was stunning. How many episodes did they make?

All the best,

Aww, it's sad. He was so funny.

At least at 84 he'd had a decent innings.

On which note ... back to the cricket thread.
I was very sad to hear the news of his passing this morning. I don't think I've ever laughed quite as hard at a movie as I did with Airplane! and The Naked Gun(s), and Police Squad is sublime too.

One of my favourite lines:

Frank: It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

Jane: Goodyear?

Frank: No, the worst.

Ed
He wasn't always a comedy actor, his early stuff before Police Squad and Airplane was guest star roles in TV shows and TV Movies, he usually played the bad guy and always a very heavy dramatic storyline. There's one TV movie he did where a bridge was collapsing and he wouldn't let anyone off it , he was the bad guy in that. He was always cropping up in the shows I watched in my teenage years.
The last thing I saw him in he looked unwell and had lost alot of weight. Very good actor.
And another:

Frank: "Jane, what can you tell me about this man you saw last night?"

Jane: "Well, he's caucasian..."

Frank: "Caucasian?"

Jane: "Yeah, y'know, white guy, with a moustache, about six foot three..."

Frank "Awfully big moustache."

Ed
Only 6 episodes of Police Squad! were made - "we would have come earlier but your husband wasn't dead then"
Ahhh now I know why I watched the bridge movie! Brendan Boone (Chief) was in it!

I seen that one on the news this morning Ed...made me chuckle.
Don't forget the classic sci-fi film Forbidden Planet which was made all the way back in 1956.
Funny, funny man. RIP.
dead, but not forgotten!!!
a comic genius, i can clearly remember watching airplane at pics 1st time in 1980, people were literally in tears!!! thats comic genius. i still cry with laughter now after the umpteen time watching it
So sad. Loved Airplane!
