The card number is the long number on the front of your credit/debit card. Don't put your PIN number in.

Paypal is perfectly safe.

Register you credit card with paypal. It's a safe way to pay as only paypal has your card number and you don't have to divulge it to every site you are dealing with.

Can anyone tell me what Paypal is and its advantages? Is it any different from just paying the usual way with a debit/credit card?

I have been dealing on the net with PayPal for years and never had a problem. In fact I like dealing with them. Not only eBay but many other companies use them. It is very convenient, once you have set up an account they will deal with everything for you and you do not need to produce your card number again.

Paypal is really just a glorified card payment handler.
They will, however, charge approx 4% for receiving money for you.
Paypal will organise payments & receipts using Bank debit or Credit Cards.
