eastenders in comic relief

i let my kids stay up a bit lter last night to watch comic relief. While the Eastender thing was on I went to get their pjs and put the washer on etc., so i didn't see it.
I don't watch eastenders so have no idea about their storylines.

When my 9 year old daughter went to bed, she was crying. I thought it was because of the africa films, but she said the eastenders thing had really scared her. She wouldn't tell me what she'd seen though.

Whitney was being used in selling sex by this guy that she met a few weeks back. It showed her being taken to what she thought was a party but it turned out to be a house full of blokes and one other girl. The girls were going to be used as the entertainment! I found it quite frightening to watch actually.

OMG! i would never had let her see that!
I let them stay up until 9.25, i thought that comic relief would be safe to watch at that time.
I don't know what i'm going to say to her about it.
She is a very sensitive girl and i know this will play on her mind.

It was basically showing what happens to some young girls (and boys) who are exploited in this way and that some of the Comic Relief money is going to charities to help these youngsters.

Obviously you know your daughter, but if it was me, I would tell her the truth about it.

It was going to be shown even earlier than that but due to technical difficulties with the sound it was shown a bit later. Davina McCall mentioned afterwards that children as young as 10 are exploited in this way.

It was hard to watch and in some way I agree with your sentiments Crisgal.

I agree with beejay, tell her the truth cris that there are some nasty people who will do this kind of thing and this is why it is imperative she shouldn't talk to strangers unless mum is with her

yes hw I see that too of cause and it's usually a person known to them but maybe this would be lot for a little girl to take in, I don't know what the best way would be, cris says she is very sensitive, I suppose telling her the full facts in a simplified way would be best

thanks for your advice guys, i will talk to her tonight.
I don't believe that there were tech difficulties at all, they were probably still deciding whether or not it was too early to show it.
I understand that it happens to young girls, which of course is awful and they must be helped. i do still say though, that the clip was aimed at people who were donating money for the cause and therefore, over 16s. Ergo, it could have been shown much later.
Any young girl of 10/12 who has a boyfriend at that age, would more than likely, be staying up late anyway!

I didn't have a problem with this at all and even if I'd had youngsters in the house, I wouldn't have worried about them watching it. But then we're all different as parents and I can understand your concern. Thinking on it, I don't recall them saying beforehand that it concerned some disturbing scenes, which I think it should have done.

Im with Saxy_jag in that I had/have no problem with my son watching this (his 12) I think it opens up conversation for me to explain things to him

yes i know the watershed is at 9, but surely the beeb would be aware that younger children would be staying up a bit later to watch. They had taken part in many fund-raising actvities at school throughout the week, and the kids channels were full of it too. So, i said they stay up till half nine as a special treat.

I wouldn't have a problem with a son of 12 seeing it though.
