I had a mate in the early 60's and we did our Junior Jobs together in Brighton. He later joined the RAMC and was stationed in Sarawak. He was on a helicopter patrol exercise when there was a sudden total system failure and the helicopter crashed into the hillside. Apparently, this type of aircraft was known to explode easily on crashes and all the patrol jumped out and "ran for it" including my mate. However, the patrol commander was trapped by his arm and couldn't move at which point my mate ran back up the hill and cut the trapped officer's arm free by amputating it despite the hich chance of the crashed helicopter exploding.

he was awarded the MM or MC can't remember which.
