I listened to this on a long car journey today and it made for riveting radio.
This is the sort of thing that the Beeb does so well.
People from all sides concerned with the Birmingham pub bombings and subsequent miscarriage of justice were brought together again. I urge everybody to try to listen again with the iplayer.
I felt sorry in the end, not just for the people jailed erroneously, and their families, but also for Brian Hambleton whose sister Maxine was killed in the Birmingham bombs and who is still campaigning to bring the real bombers to justice. He has yet to have closure it would seem.

Funny though, how all the corrupt Police Officers were never convicted.....now who would have thought that possible ?
"On 28 November 1974, the men appeared in court for the second time after they had been remanded into custody at HM Prison Winson Green. All showed bruising and other signs of ill-treatment. Fourteen prison officers were charged with assault in June 1975, but were all acquitted at a trial presided over by Mr. Justice Swanwick. The Six brought a civil claim for damages against the West Midlands Police in 1977, which was struck out on 17 January 1980 by the Court of Appeal (Civil Division), constituted by the Master of the Rolls, Lord Denning, Goff LJ and Sir George Baker, under the principle of estoppel.
During proceedings, prison officers and police were blamed for the beatings. A prisoner released from prison two weeks after the Six were admitted testified to the beatings the six men had received"

This series is some of the best radio I've ever heard. Fortunately, 81 of the other episodes are available to listen to on the programme's web page. I can heartily recommend the Far East Prisoners of War one from earlier this year, Spycatcher. Boys From The Blackstuff and 60s Girl Singers. But they are all riveting.

SeaJayPea...I agree 100% !
The Beeb comes in for a lot of stick on AB, especially from the Usual Suspects, but what other Radio station has ever, or will ever produce programs of this quality ? With the exception of LBC, its just endless the wall-to-wall drudgery of pop music.
We should be so very proud that we have an organisation like the BBC !
